Fonterra restructures its operations unit

New Zealand dairy processor Fonterra has restructured its operations into a single strategic business unit and restructured its top management team.

The new business unit, Fonterra Operations and Trade (FOT), combines all functions from the farm gate to the company’s global trade customers. These include: Milk supply, shareholder relations, milk collection, NZ operations, offshore milk sourcing and processing, supply chain, sustainability, government relations and global trade.

Science supports dairy calcium for weight loss

Increased intakes of calcium can increase excretion of fat in the faeces, and may play a role in weight management and preventing weight gain, says a review of the science.

Increasing daily calcium intakes from dairy by 1241 mg was associated with an increase in fat excretion of 5.2 grams per day, according to a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomised, controlled trials.

Why hold a World Milk Day?
The World Milk Day provides an opportunity to focus attention on milk and to publicise activities connected with milk and the milk industry. The fact that many countries choose to do this on the same day lends additional importance to individual national celebrations and shows that milk is a global food.

Where did it begin?
FAO (the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) was asked to propose a specific day on which all aspects of milk could be celebrated.

Why 1st June?

Scientists are endeavouring to combine knowledge of the composition of milk with knowledge of the natural variation in the cow's inherited traits. The aim is to be able to select cows on the basis of specific milk qualities.

The future will probably not give us milkshakes or yoghurt straight from the udder. And yet - perhaps a new Danish-Swedish research project that will be launched at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Aarhus University, will in the future make it easier for the farmer to identify the cows that produce milk specifically suited to, say, cheese production or with a particularly healthy fatty acid composition.
